The Horrific Truth Behind Saiko! The Large Family
What if the most chilling horror you could imagine came not from spooky ghosts or monsters, or Nicolas Cage playing some kind of powdered serial killer, but from the hidden cracks within a seemingly ordinary, albeit somewhat large family? Tonight on the program, we will be exploring the horrific depths of a peculiar video known as Banned From Broadcast: Saiko! The Large Family. I first heard about this from ReignBot’s channel, so check them out if you're so inclined:

I just saw a wonderful film by the name of I Saw the TV Glow, directed by Jane Schoenbrun. The film had a limited theatrical release; I'm pleased to say I was able to see it in theaters. If you haven't been able to see it yet, the movie is now available on VOD, and I'd highly recommend you check it out. I have been following Jane Schoenbrun closely ever since happening upon We're All Going to t...

Today we'll be delving into a most peculiar and unsettling piece of footage recently uploaded by a UA-cam channel called Alluvium. It appears to depict, you guessed it, a malfunctioning PS1 game. So, yeah, that’s kind of my specialty. I should let you know upfront that there are a number of disturbing elements in this footage so keep that in mind prior to watching the video. I’m going to be bre...

#m3gan #nightmaremasterclass #horrorstories In this installment, I am going to be sharing some thoughts on a fun little horror movie I recently watched called M3GAN. #NathanFielder #TheRehearsal #NightmareMasterclass In this installment, I’d like to discuss The Rehearsal, a series on HBO created by a comedian named Nathan Fielder. At first glance, The Rehearsal might seem like another one of Fielder’s comedic vehicles. You might think it’s yet another parodic reality tv show, like Nathan For You. In a certain sense, this is true; however, after a thorough i...

In this installment, I'll be talking about a movie called We're All Going to the World's Fair, which premiered at Sundance last year. It is the directorial debut of Jane Schoenbrun, and I would say it is very impressive for her first feature length film. Schoenbrun referred to this project as an “emo horror movie,” and I think that’s an apt description. References: Rotten Tomatoes: www.rottento...

I actually think your analysis is better suited to the first film, Saiko! is actually a sequel. It was part of a six part series of mockumentaries that were mini-mysteries for the audience to solve. It takes place years prior with the original father having lost his job and the stress of supporting a large family with the humiliation of not working, starts abusing his kids, possibly killing one. The mother poisoned her husband with his exclusive meal that he sometimes shared with the family cat, and she was having her kids help out again with her new husband. It’s also implied that her eldest son helped with the murder of his father as his posters are confessions in his room and he’s shut himself in due to the trauma.

I tricked myself into thinking of the dad as the Good Guy trying his best so I was having trouble with the fact that Ringo is poisoning him just like their previous abusive father (and his cat, idk why the cat had to go), even after the mother is dealt with (the knives stuck in the fruit coupled with at least two of the children's names being fruits, Ringo which is apple and Remon which is Lemon hint at what she does to them). NM's analysis coupled with the dad's earlier descriptions as "creepy" and "gross" for his trying too hard to be their father, made me think of Japan's belly-up attitude and more recent "hyper kawaii-zation", where a lot of media is very interested in selling some idea of things being ok, while very blatantly ignoring darker themes even when they're right there (a ton of isekai, the most overpopulated genre, start with a death from over-working that is swiftly sweeped under the rug and never mentioned again). Ringo knows this has to go as well. Even though the dad helped her, and even though she has to use her mother's tools/plan (before she was dealt with I thought it was gonna be something like the mom waited the 7 years for the money, then re-married immediately to kill her new husband and repeat the cycle. I still think this was her plan, but I think it's significant that though Ringo and Gouki get rid of her, they continue with her plan), it's for the family's sake. The statement I'm reading is something like "Even though we owe a lot to the previous generations, we can't ignore the harm they do (mom had to go, obviously, but nice dad has to go as well). And even if we reject their ideas and may even leave them behind, we can still use their tools and what they've given us shamelessly (keeping with mom's plan even when she's gone), for the good of the younger generations". /// Thinking further about the cat, maybe it's something about globalization? He's called Enrique I think. Like the abusive dad is the previous national ideology (which fits with the current dad's meaning) and a small part of it was Japan's sacrifices for the sake of being more welcoming to foreigners (which fits a little less as a metaphor because globalization feels like a more current thing than a part of the ideology of WW2 Japan)? Or maybe the previous dad is the U.S. and the cat is globalization (which makes more sense as an isolated metaphor but muddies the meaning of the current dad)
